The Hideout

Overland Park, Kansas

The Ask

To transform a dark, nightclub-like lower level into a bright, versatile space that better supported their family’s lifestyle. The goal was to create a welcoming area for movies and sporting events, incorporate a dedicated home gym, and reclaim underutilized square footage—most notably beneath the stairs—by turning it into a playful kids’ hideout that still felt connected to the main space. Light tones, white oak finishes, improved lighting, and thoughtful storage solutions were key to delivering a lower level that felt open, functional, and inviting rather than heavy or enclosed.

The Result

A completely reimagined lower level that feels bright, intentional, and highly livable. What was once dark and club-like is now an inviting, multi-use space designed for movie nights, game days, workouts, and everyday family time. Light finishes and white oak details dramatically lifted the tone, while new flooring, paint, wall molding, and updated lighting brought cohesion and polish throughout. Previously wasted space beneath the stairs was transformed into a playful kids’ hideout—connected to the main room yet offering a sense of privacy and ownership.

The bar area was thoughtfully reworked to improve flow and function, with the refrigerator relocated, a hidden pantry door introduced, and cabinetry adjusted to accommodate existing utilities while maintaining clean lines. A dedicated gym now anchors one side of the space, featuring a white oak slat wall and a custom storage bench for equipment. Despite working within the existing footprint and navigating complex mechanical constraints, the finished lower level feels purposeful, flexible, and dramatically brighter—supporting the family’s lifestyle with both function and style.
